June 17, 2008:

 

Then it was off to Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance.  Here is the city, situated on the Arno River.  The big cathedral behind John is the Duomo del Santa Maria del Fiore.

 

We walked down to the city from our campsite.  The old city wall is in the background.  We ate a delicious lunch at a restaurant just inside this gate.  Something they do with the tomato sauce...mmmm....

Michaelangelo painted the "Last Judgment" inside the dome.

 

Just outside the cathedral is a gelato place called Grom.  Florence is reputed to have the best gelato in Italy.  This gelato was awesome.  Once again, this got the kids really excited.  Check out Grom's done-up website!

 

And in the Accademia is Michaelangelo's David.  We never made it to the museum, but I cheated and found this picture on the web.  Check out the detail of David's face!
