The Nagasawa Family Photos September 2020
From August 30 - September 5, we joined some friends at Martha's Vineyard.
On the ferry ride to Martha's Vineyard...
We rented a house in East Chop, in a town called Oak Bluffs. This section of Martha's Vineyard is a town in the north of the island. During the 19th century, it was a refuge to freed slaves. By the mid-20th century, it became a popular summer vacation spot for African American professionals and creatives. It was the only one of the six towns on the island where African Americans were welcome to find lodging in the Jim Crow era through the mid-20th century. For example, I found an online Black Culture Guide to the Best of Martha's Vineyard. Ming and I were introduced to Martha's Vineyard mostly through our friend and former housemate Carla Booker (thanks, Carla!).
We don't know the history of this particular house, but it was beautifully kept and spacious. This is the main house, which had four rooms. The garage had extra bikes, helmets, and locks. Above the garage was a bedroom and bathroom.
This is the cottage, which had a bedroom and bathroom. We got in some nice reading on that hammock.
The front porch was large and shaded.
John practiced martial arts in the backyard. We also used that grill quite a lot during the week.
There were huge trees. One had a swing tied to it, but the children broke the ropes...
Sunsets were often amazing
The first friends to join us were Liza, Jacob, Camila, Dira, Anthony, and Beth. We wore masks indoors.
One of our nicer dinners: scallops, roasted broccoli and corn and zucchini, caramelized onions, baked carrots, bacon, mac and cheese, chips and homemade salsa, and pasta. We ate leftovers for the next few meals!
Zoe's plum tart on another night when we made pizza. On another night, we stocked ourselves with many pints of Ben and Jerry's ice cream... mmmmm...
